Discover a range of exciting activities and events to celebrate this Merdeka Day weekend in and around Kuala Lumpur.

What is Merdeka?

Merdeka is the Malay word for Independence, and “It is the official independence day of Malaysia from the British Empire.” which falls on the 31st August.

This year will be the 66th year, and a huge parade will be held in the federal administrative capital, Putrajaya, a city about 35km south of Kuala Lumpur.

For some of us who have no plans to leave Kuala Lumpur and would like to make the most of the celebrations, as well as a work-free day and something to keep the kids entertained;

Here is a list of 10 Fun Activities and Events in and around Kuala Lumpur this Merdeka Day:

1. KLCC Park

Experience lights, art and Live Performances.

Merdeka eve celebrations start at 8:00pm, Wednesday, 30 August 2023.

2. Sustain.ed

Plastic pouch making workshop and Malaysian marine life talk/discussion

7. KL Tower

“In conjunction with the 66th Malaysia’s Independence month, there is a discount of 66% for entrance tickets to all Kuala Lumpur Tower attractions, from now until September 16, 2023.”

On 30 August 2023, KL Tower will be extending their operation hours until 1:00am. The last admission time will be at 12:00am.

8. Kwai Chai Hong

If you are in the area, there is currently an art installation on in Kwai Chai Hong, called Moonlit Dragon.

9. “Glow in the Dark’ workshop

If you are looking for a fun, kid-friendly activity, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (IAMM) will be hosting a Glow In The Dark Workshop!
